DESCRIPTION:Indigenous Agroforestry Network’s second webinar of the year focuses on forest farming!  \nIn the Pacific Northwest\, demand for the locally sourced and uniquely flavored bigleaf maple syrup is driving a burgeoning industry for maple sugaring\, a practice that is largely new to the region. Similarly\, forest cultivated shiitake\, a common forest farming system in eastern states\, is gaining traction as a source of supplemental income for forest owners and farmers. Patrick Shults (Washington State University Extension) will discuss the challenges and opportunities of adapting these forest farming practices to the unique climate\, forests\, and social context of the Pacific Northwest. \nThis webinar is led by the Indigenous Agroforestry Network\, a collection of partners across the Pacific Northwest including Ecotrust\, USDA National Agroforestry Center\, Intertribal Nursery Council\, US Forest Service\, Heritage University\, the Hoopa Valley Tribe\, Cal Poly Humboldt\, Washington State University Extension\, and Oregon State University.
