A crowd of event-goers mingle in front of a light-filled bar in Irving Street Studio

We proudly welcome Latinx-owned coffee shop La Perlita and prepare to open Irving Street Studio, our newest event space at the Natural Capital Center.

2018 is shaping up with new energy, fresh concepts, and homegrown innovation in the first floor of Ecotrust’s Natural Capital Center. This month, we welcome our new friends from KIOSKO, who are launching their third Latinx-owned and inspired cafe, La Perlita. Stop by for a delicious chocolate mole ahogado, café de olla, and a healthy dose of warm hospitality.

Later this year, we are launching Irving Street Studio, Portland’s exciting new venue for big idea summits, rainmaker fundraisers, unique markets, and inspired social gatherings. With more than 7,000 square feet of beautiful wood floors plus historic arched doorways, this timeless industrial warehouse embodies the aesthetic that has been the hallmark of the Natural Capital Center. We’re thrilled to witness these new concepts converge to spark new life throughout our first floor commons.

At Irving Street Studio, function follows form. In 2017, we bid our friends from Patagonia goodbye after 15 years of community partnership. You can still visit them at 1106 W. Burnside Street. While we mulled what might be next for the storefront location, we used the vacant space to host large events like Paul Hawken’s sold-out Drawdown book launch. Soon thereafter, interest sprang from members of Portland’s innovative business community, who needed a truly unique venue to hatch big ideas. Wedding clients were wowed by the expansive space and striking character. Conference planners were intrigued by the idea of using all three floors of our historic building. Pop-up culinary markets were delighted by the stunning Irving Street entrance, incredible flexibility, and easy flow. We began to think that we may be on to something. Perhaps the form of the space — with its open layout, historic charm, convenient street access, and the ability to converge with the rest of the building — functions quite perfectly as the next quintessential Portland gathering space. With great enthusiasm, we’re seizing that opportunity!

Under the expertise of fellow Ecotrust community member, Green Hammer, we’re enhancing Irving Street Studio to create the perfect backdrop for your next engagement. The 1895 warehouse will continue to shine with its old-growth Douglas-fir floors, large windows, brick walls, and inviting archways, but thoughtful amenities will add to the functionality.

The new venue is divided into three rooms, the west room can seat up to 280 guests for a meal and 375 as a theater. The east room is beautifully situated for ceremonies, receptions, and silent auctions. The third room, a historic bank vault and the original warehouse office, will retain its charm but allow for the privacy required for board meetings, breakouts, and bridal suites. Six gender-inclusive restrooms will be added to create a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.

Our curated list of largely women and minority-owned caterers, including KIOSKO, will use the new kitchen to tempt your tastebuds and create memorable meals. Spill out to our stunning atrium, offering a convenient place for coat check and registration. Adding our two additional breakout rooms on the second floor can accommodate an amazing array of conferences, summits, and creative gatherings. Don’t stop there — a happy hour on our rooftop terrace is the perfect ending to your inspired day of learning. With Irving Street Studio, the Natural Capital Center is primed and ready to welcome three floors of energized, engaged citizenry. A full list of details can be found here.

We believe in the power of convening. The Natural Capital Center’s community gathering spaces offer a place to build new partnerships, explore what matters to you, dance, feast, and celebrate any occasion. When you host your event with us, you support our nonprofit work to build a new economy that holds people and nature at its heart. All profits are invested back into Ecotrust’s work to create radical, practical change right here at home.

Please join us on the ground floor as we celebrate our new community. La Perlita opens this month, bringing our commons together around culture and people, coffee and innovation, and superlative hospitality. Irving Street Studio opens at the end of the year, and it’s not too early to reach out to  to explore the possibilities of creating something extraordinary with us. We look forward to sharing our spaces with you.
