OSU Extension Small Farms Program will Use Grants to Strengthen Oregon’s Food Systems

A USDA Regional Food Systems Partnerships grant has been awarded to a collaborative of partners: OSU Center for Small Farms & Community Food Systems, Oregon Food Hub Network, which is part of the Oregon Community Food Systems Network; Black Food Sovereignty Coalition; Ecotrust; Oregon Climate & Agriculture Network; Oregon Economic Development Districts; Market of Choice and the Oregon Department of Agriculture.

One of the three examples examined in this article is the partnership between the Swinomish Indian tribe and Ecotrust in developing a new forest management plan. The resulting Swinomish Forest Bank illustrates how ecosystem markets can be inaccessible to Indigenous peoples due to histories of land fractionation and presents a strategy that respects and acknowledges this history, while also creating new legal structures to enable that access.

When the pandemic hit, instructors took the class online, where students have been observing wildlife via trail cams near Yakama Nation Tribal School.
