Supporting American Farmland Trust in providing training for agricultural service providers on systemic barriers to land access and tools for choosing creative land access models
Ecotrust was a supporting partner in American Farmland Trust’s Farmland for the Next Generation in the Pacific Northwest 2022 training series. This program aims to give agricultural service providers in Washington State the foundational skills and expertise needed to provide impactful technical assistance to beginning farmers and ranchers around finding, assessing, and securing land to farm.
Ecotrust’s role included setting the stage for the training series by presenting on systemic barriers to land access that Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) farmers; LGBTQ+ farmers; and immigrant and refugee farmers face as beginning farmers. We did this by interviewing farmers among these audiences and integrated their perspectives into the curriculum. Main themes from the research were also compiled and shared with other trainers in the program to support their development and delivery of other parts of the training series.
We also developed a land access decision-making tool based on the present-day creative land access models reference list compiled by American Farmland Trust.
